The drive back to their base in Colorado had been fruitful. On the way, they found an abandoned gas truck full of diesel fuel, which they could use. One of Mitchâs men, who had been an experienced engine mechanic in his old life, got the truck running after tinkering under the hood. They drove it back. Oil was a precious commodity. They always sought out fuel sources, while harnessing alternative energy sources. They had become adept at using vegetable oil as a fuel source after modifying the engines of some of the vehicles to accommodate it. Most recently, they had turned to solar power. They were also in the process of restarting a nearby nuclear power plant and an oil refinery.
Mitch had also been in the process of securing as many electric vehicles as possible. They had mostly been using them in their day-to-day operations. Any way they could conserve fuel was an option they considered.
They arrived late the following morning in Colorado after having set up camp in Utah the previous night.
When Mitch arrived, Elizabeth had been guiding a tour for a new group of dirty and disheveled settlers. Among them was a boy not yet in his teens who looked like he was made of patches of skin clinging to a skeleton. The gaping holes in his shoes matched the ones in his pants. He had outgrown his shirt, its sleeves extending just past his elbows.
Elizabeth ran over and hugged Mitch. âThank God you guys are back. How did it go?â
Mitch didnât answer right away. âGood.â
âIs that all youâre going to give me?â Elizabeth asked.
Mitch hesitated. When he was with the SEALs, he gave information on a need-to-know basis and never to a civilian. That veil of secrecy died when the United States armed forces died. His people had a right to know. They were all in this together.
âIt was a success. We got in undetected, destroyed some buildings that are valuable to the aliens, and got out. Hopefully, theyâll leave like the others after we attacked them in the San Fernando Valley.â
âYou have no idea how worried I get whenever you guys leave. I donât know how you do it, knowing you might not come back. Ask Ethan. Iâm a nervous wreck.â
Mitch chuckled. âYou would never make it on one of our teams being jumpy like that.â
âWell, Iâm glad youâre back.â Elizabeth gave him a peck on the cheek. âSee you later.â
She ran off to join the new settlers. He surveyed the expanding community. It had grown so much since he had first landed with Elizabeth. They had started a second town five miles away, maintaining the same principle of remaining inconspicuous, and camouflaging their construction. As they grew, that had become increasingly difficult.
It was a risk worth taking. For the first time, they were starting to live and not just survive. At first, they had concentrated on basic necessities such as food and shelter. After Mitch took charge, he had prioritized educating the children, and building his military forces.
